Tree Pruning
There are a number of reasons you may want or need to prune your trees, from encouraging growth and longevity to ensuring asset clearance compliance. Whilst trees will generally look after themselves, as nature intended, when they co-exist in the urban environment there are times where intervention may be necessary.
Engaging an arborist competent in correct pruning techniques can prolong the life of a tree in an urban setting, reduce potential hazards, increase aesthetic value and provide essential clearance from things such as overhead powerlines. Before undertaking any work on your tree, our team of qualified arborists will provide advice as to what, if any, pruning is required and what tree management options are available to achieve your outcomes.
At the time of the quote or service we can also provide advice regarding a pruning schedule to support your long-term tree management.
Tree Planting
Planting trees is one of the simplest and most impactful ways to deliver long-term environmental, economic, and wellbeing benefits. Trees improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff and flash flooding, and help cool our cities by lowering summer temperatures.
They can also boost property values, reduce energy costs, and support better mental and physical health through access to greener, shaded environments.
In urban areas like Canberra, planting also plays a vital role in renewing the tree canopy when removal occurs. Under the ACT’s Urban Forest Act 2023, replanting is a requirement when a protected tree is removed.
We deliver planting solutions that meet both regulatory requirements and sustainability goals — helping grow a diverse, resilient urban forest that supports Canberra’s long-term ecological health.
Habitat Trees
Trees provide essential habitat for many creatures. Even after removal, trees can be repurposed in ways that continue to support the environment. Logs left on the ground provide essential food and shelter for wildlife and can also be used creatively — as garden edging, landscape features, pond habitat, or informal garden seating.
In urban areas, trees are often assessed based on their visual appeal and safety. In the process, opportunities to retain parts of a tree that support wildlife and biodiversity are often missed. At Treasure Trees, we take a holistic view, considering the full value of a tree, whether it’s alive or dead. We provide expert advice on how much of a tree should be removed, balancing safety requirements with its potential to provide habitat for animals, insects, and invertebrates.
Enhancing biodiversity and securing habitat for local wildlife is one of our most important responsibilities. We create artificial hollows, install nest boxes, and construct log habitats to ensure native species continue to thrive. We believe that keeping or creating habitat should always be part of the decision-making process when a tree is being removed.
Treasure Trees also regularly assists ACT Wildlife in wildlife rescue and are positioned to handle any emergencies with care and compassion. Whether rescuing injured animals or supporting displaced wildlife, we have the specialist equipment and skills to help ensure the well-being of our tree-dwelling fauna (or those that accidentally end up there!)
What are the benefits?
Aside from the obvious benefits of creating a safe home for native flora and fauna, habitat creation has a range of ecological benefits.
Dead trees are good for the environment: Trees use carbon dioxide to grow, with around half of a tree’s dry weight is made up of carbon. So, dead trees play an important role in sequestering (storing) carbon dioxide, keeping it out of the atmosphere and releasing it very slowly as the tree degrades with age.
Create a feature: Habitat pruning allows you to keep a dead tree in situ while creating a beautiful (or sometimes abstract) hollow-bearing feature for flora and fauna to live in. It’s another, more creative method of hazard reduction that promotes wildlife well-being.
Our Services include:
- Pruning for habitat
- Hollow creation or nest box installation (for possums, flying foxes, bats, native birds etc)
- Log evaluation & habitat creation
Sick Trees and Pest Treatments
Sometimes, you may notice that your tree isn’t looking quite right, but you may not be able to pinpoint the problem. If you notice a change in your tree that doesn’t match up with typical seasonal patterns, get in touch so we can assess whether there is a problem that needs attending to.
Getting to the core of the issue is critical to ensuring that your tree receives the right care. Some insects can cause significant damage quickly, putting your tree under stress. A misdiagnosis can lead to insufficient treatment or, worst case, a further decline or death of the tree.
Treatments can include stem or soil injections, and sometimes, it may just be that your tree is getting too much or too little of a specific nutrient. Regardless of the issue, our arborists will always keep your tree’s health and any treatment’s impact on the surrounding environment in mind when dealing with pests and diseases.
Tree Preservation and Remediation
If a tree becomes hazardous, there are often steps we can take to lower the risk to an acceptable level without having to remove the tree. Some of the mitigation strategies we can use are;
Bracing – if a tree has an active split in a codominant fork, a steel bolt can be installed to secure the split, giving the tree time to seal over the wound and create reaction wood to strengthen the union. Bolting is done in conjunction with either steel or dynamic cabling.
Cabling – Cabling, using either steel cable or a dynamic system, is installed in the canopy to help prevent excessive movement of main leaders when there is concern for structural integrity (eg when there is an active split at the union). Cables can also be installed to “catch” the weight of a branch should it fail.
Guying or Propping – can be used to provide additional structural support to a tree or limb at risk of failing.
There are many other risk mitigation strategies our arborists employ that can often be the difference between retention and removal of the high value assets that trees can be. The best place to start if you think your tree may need some structural support is by booking in for a consultation with one of our arborists.

Tree Transplanting
Whether you’re relocating a tree for a construction project or simply want to give it a new lease on life, our team partners with experts in tree transplantation to ensure a successful result.
What is tree transplantation?
Tree transplantation is the process of relocating an existing, usually mature, tree and replanting it in a new location. Depending on the size and species, transplanting can be a process that takes months to undertake, to enable adequate preparation for the tree, including the correct time of year to transplant, ensuring the tree is not placed into a state of shock.
What kind of trees are suitable?
Any tree, big or small, can be transplanted. Whilst some species are more resilient than others, the most important element is getting the right advice, with plenty of lead time, to ensure the best results.
That’s why we partner with established experts as we continue to increase our transplanting skills.
Mulching
Mulching isn’t just about making your garden look fresh — it’s an essential component of environmentally sustainable gardens and landscapes, a vital practice for nurturing healthy landscapes. Arborist wood chip (mulch) has been found to be one of the best performers when it comes to moisture retention, temperature control of the soil, weed suppression and stimulating essential microorganisms. Our mulching services can turn your cut branches into a valuable way to protect your soil, conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and enhance your outdoor space.
Benefits of Mulching
Considering mulch is a useful and natural way to boost your garden’s well-being, we prefer to use it. That’s why we do our best to share it with our local community to help their gardens thrive.
After a job
We are happy to leave your mulch onsite free of charge for you to spread in your garden. Just let us know your preference up front and make sure you’ve cleared a space for us to leave it.
Large-scale mulch deliveries
If you’re a landscaper, corporate or strata manager, or looking for a large quantity of mulch for upcoming projects, contact us, and we’ll do our best to facilitate your request.
Community
If you’re a community group or simply a local getting ready for a working bee, we often list our mulch on community pages or groups on Facebook.
Powerline Clearing
In Canberra, homeowners are responsible for keeping power lines over our property clear from obstruction, including trees. If you haven’t kept an eye on your tree growth you may receive a Vegetation Notice from EvoEnergy, advising you to prune back your tree/s.
Treasure Trees are EvoEnergy-accredited arborists authorised to undertake all required powerline tree management and maintenance. We’ll work with you to ensure you meet your homeowner obligations.
We recommend keeping an eye on your trees and pruning them before you receive a notice. If pruning occurs after they get too close to the power lines, a power outage may be required, which comes with a significant cost from EvoEnergy.
Tree Removal
Whilst our team is competent and equipped to undertake complex and large tree removals, we are committed to exploring and exhausting all possible preservation options before recommending removal. Where it is the only viable option, our team will walk you through the tree removal process from start to finish.
Approvals
Trees of regulation size (protected under Canberra’s tree protection laws) require approval prior to removal, Our team can manage the application process for you, including any requirements you may have to re-plant on site.
What’s the alternative if tree removal is not recommended or not approved?
If your tree has a manageable structural issue, some tailored professional pruning may be all it needs. We have highly qualified climbing arborists who can undertake pruning and limb removal on mature and difficult access trees.
If a healthy tree needs to be removed for development or essential infrastructure work, we may be able to transplant it with the help of our partners. Read more about Tree Transplanting.
Stump Grinding
For many people, stump grinding after tree removal is the assumed next step. Whilst there are clear benefits to the removal of stumps, such as preventing the spread of disease (where the removed tree was a carrier), removing trip hazards or making space for future plantings, it is not always necessary.
If you have an established garden, removing a stump may cause a disruption to the natural ecosystem you have built, potentially impacting wildlife living in and around your garden. Our team is able to provide considered advice as to which option may better suit your desired outcome.
Our team is equipped to access residential gardens including small access points and will undertake essential service checks prior to commencing work, such as gaining a Before you Dig check.
